WASTE & RECYCLING INSURANCE SPECIALISTS A nationwide program

Transfer station insurance · Nationwide

Transfer station insurance for operators nationwide.

A tipping floor mixes the public, commercial haulers, heavy equipment and unknown waste under one roof. When it stops, everything upstream stops with it. The program covers the floor, the site and the trucks leaving it.

Exposure matrix

What goes wrong, and what responds.

The exposures below are the ones that actually generate claims in this segment. Each one maps to a specific coverage on the program. That mapping is the underwriting.

Ref
Exposure
What happens & what responds
FLOOR

Tipping floor traffic

Public drop-off customers, commercial packers and loaders operating in the same space produce struck-by and backing incidents with serious severity.Responds: General liability & workers' compensation

FIRE

Fire on the floor or in the pit

Lithium batteries and hot loads are the leading fire cause at transfer stations, and a floor fire doesn't just damage the building. It shuts down every route that tips there.Responds: Property & business income

IRON

Scales, loaders & excavators

Scale systems, wheel loaders, excavators and grapples are expensive, hard-worked and essential; a breakdown bottlenecks the whole operation.Responds: Property, inland marine & equipment breakdown

SITE

Stormwater & site contamination

Leachate, runoff and historical contamination at the site are a pollution exposure your general liability policy is not designed to pick up.Responds: Site pollution liability

NABE

Neighbor & nuisance claims

Odor, dust, noise and litter complaints from abutters can turn into liability claims and permit fights.Responds: Site pollution & general liability

HAUL

Outbound transfer trailers

Top-load and walking-floor trailers running to disposal carry both a severe auto exposure and an in-transit pollution exposure.Responds: Commercial auto & transportation pollution

One program, whole operation

This segment rarely travels alone.

Most operations that run transfer stations work also run other parts of the chain. The program underwrites the whole operation together. See the other segments below or start from the program overview.

Transfer station insurance FAQ

Common questions, straight answers.

For anything specific to your operation, call 978-897-7773 and ask about the Waste Industry Insurance Program.

Does business income coverage apply if the tipping floor shuts down?
That's exactly what it's for. A fire or equipment failure that stops the floor stops your revenue, and business income coverage replaces it during the shutdown. The key is setting the limit based on real throughput, which we work out with you rather than guessing.
What's the difference between site pollution and general liability at a transfer station?
General liability handles bodily injury and property damage from your operations, but it commonly excludes pollution. Site pollution liability covers contamination at and from the facility itself. Stormwater, leachate, spills and gradual releases. Which is often also a permit or lease requirement.
Can the program cover both the station and our trucks?
Yes. That's the point of a program. Facility property, liability, pollution, workers' comp and the outbound trucking all sit on one coordinated placement, so nothing falls in the gap between a facility policy and a trucking policy.
