WASTE & RECYCLING INSURANCE SPECIALISTS A nationwide program
insurewasteBY THE GETCHELL COMPANIES
Landfill services insurance · Nationwide

Landfill insurance and site liability nationwide.

Few operations concentrate more long-tail risk in one place: heavy iron on the working face, leachate and gas systems underground, and obligations that run decades past the last load. The program is built for that horizon.

Exposure matrix

What goes wrong, and what responds.

The exposures below are the ones that actually generate claims in this segment. Each one maps to a specific coverage on the program. That mapping is the underwriting.

Ref
Exposure
What happens & what responds
FACE

Working face operations

Compactors, dozers and haul trucks working alongside third-party drivers on the active face create high-severity struck-by and rollover exposure.Responds: Workers' comp, general liability & equipment

LCHT

Leachate & gas systems

A leachate escape or gas migration event reaches groundwater and neighbors. A classic gradual-pollution loss that standard liability forms exclude.Responds: Site pollution liability

BURN

Surface & subsurface fires

Landfill fires are hard to extinguish, expensive to fight and generate both property damage and pollution claims at once.Responds: Property & site pollution

IRON

Heavy equipment fleet

Compactors and dozers are among the most expensive machines in the waste industry, working in the most punishing environment.Responds: Property, inland marine & equipment breakdown

HAUL

Disposal trucking

Long-haul runs to the site carry severe auto exposure plus in-transit pollution from leaking or blown loads.Responds: Commercial auto & transportation pollution

TAIL

Long-tail site obligations

Closure, post-closure care and financial assurance requirements outlive the operating life of the site and need to be structured deliberately.Responds: Program structuring & risk management

One program, whole operation

This segment rarely travels alone.

Most operations that run landfill services work also run other parts of the chain. The program underwrites the whole operation together. See the other segments below or start from the program overview.

Landfill services insurance FAQ

Common questions, straight answers.

For anything specific to your operation, call 978-897-7773 and ask about the Waste Industry Insurance Program.

Can insurance help with landfill financial assurance requirements?
Financial assurance for closure and post-closure care is a regulatory obligation with several ways to satisfy it, and how you structure it interacts with your insurance program. We work through the options with operators rather than treating it as someone else's problem.
Does general liability cover leachate or gas migration?
Almost never. Gradual pollution is a standard exclusion. Site pollution liability is the coverage designed for leachate escapes, gas migration and groundwater contamination, and it's frequently required by regulators, lenders and host communities.
We're a contractor working at landfills, not the owner. Does the program fit us?
Yes. Contractors doing cover placement, leachate hauling, gas system work or cell construction have their own version of these exposures. Contractors pollution liability in particular. And the program writes landfill service contractors as well as operators.
